Creator Profile
Sunny Nestler is a grateful and uninvited wandering queer Jew on unceded Coast Salish territories belonging to the xwməθkwÉ™y̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and sÉ™lilwÉ™taʔɬ/Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations. Nestler’s visual art practice is rooted in drawing, and studies mechanisms of biological life using a process that mimics DNA replication and mutation. Their subject matter cross-pollinates ecological processes, for example the growth of an organism, or the changing interpretation of scientific gender markers.
Nestler’s past work includes collaborative animation, community-led arts programming, a recent municipal commission, as well as thirteen years of managing community bike shops. Nestler sits on the board of UNIT/PITT Society for Art and Critical Awareness and teaches art and science classes at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
