Clare Yow

Photographic Prints

Clare Yow is a Chinese-Canadian visual artist and photographer who resides, works, and parents as a diasporic settler on the unceded, ancestral, and occupied territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ /Selilwitulh (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations, colonially known as Vancouver.

Clare’s lens-based art practice is documentary in nature—looking at how race, class, transnationality, and feminism intersect with the materials of everyday life. Seen here, her ongoing works as a flâneuse and female street photographer hold significance as a woman of colour taking up space in traditionally male-dominated realms of the street and the artistic medium. Clare is based out of her studio at BC Artscape Sun Wah in Chinatown where United Aunties was created as an extension of her community-focused art practice.
